There has always been a debate as to what benefits a really high quality business card has over a standard, average, maybe even just black on white card has. In this post I will talk about some benefits of both, and why for some industries it may not be a factor at all.
What Makes a “High End” Business Card?
To set a benchmark, we’ll talk real quick about what makes a ‘High End’ or Luxury Business Card. In my opinion (which can be debated) I’m going to define a high end luxury business card, as a custom design that is well thought out. A luxury business card takes advantage of texture, custom inks, specialized printing methods, maybe it’s interactive, or is printed on a really unique card stock. When this type of card is handed out whoever is receiving it will say “Wow!”
So Who Uses this so called ‘High End’ Anyway?
A custom business card as mentioned above isn’t for everyone, it can be a huge investment and often takes a lot of time and design skill to craft it just perfect. The most common industry to concoct such cards would have to be the creative and design related fields. In this business it is extremely important to show more creativity than the next guy and demonstrate within seconds how you can provide a solution to a potential client.
What About Not ‘High End’?
Crafting a custom business card ultimately is up to any business owner who feels it can add value to their business. I think the common misconception among business owners is that there may not be a trade off for the expense. Earlier I mentioned that designers need to demonstrate within seconds how they can provide a solution. A business card doesn’t provide the solution, but what happens in the seconds that follow the transfer of that card into someone’s hand does. It causes people to react, and often times will start a conversation which can lead to more dialogue giving you an opportunity to sell your product or service. It has also been proven that when people receive a creative business card they will retain it longer. In my experience in the print industry I have met a lot of good people that have used a ‘nothing special’ type of business card for years, and it works great! But I have also seen quality brands get diminished because of low quality printed materials.
Fortunately for everyone, we live in a technologically advanced world, and one of the technologies that has advanced is the print industry. Now more than ever everyone has access to higher quality printed goods at more affordable prices. Quality designs are available via free business card templates, or really low cost templates, which allow most any business to have a very appealing business card.
